A head-on collision between two private buses has occurred on Vajira Wansa Mawatha along the Matara–Talalla Road, said police.
According to police, nearly 40 passengers sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to hospital for treatment.
The collision involved a bus travelling from Galle to Ampara and another bus travelling from Tangalle to Matara.
Police further stated that the injured passengers have been admitted to the Matara and Batheegama hospitals.
Investigations into the accident are underway, said police.
